Different Types of Position Sensor

Position sensors are essential components used to detect and measure the movement, displacement, or rotation of mechanical systems. Based on the type of motion being measured, position sensors are mainly divided into two categories: linear position sensors and rotary position sensors.

Linear position sensors convert linear displacement into electrical signals for accurate measurement and control. They are available in contacting and non-contacting technologies. Non-contacting sensors, such as LVDT and inductive sensors, provide wear-free operation, higher reliability, and longer service life.

Rotary position sensors measure angular movement and can be designed for single-turn or multi-turn applications. Common technologies include potentiometers, Hall effect sensors, RVDT, and eddy current sensors.
